Florida Government Leaders are Moving Toward Smarter Communities
Spark Growth Launched Toward Smarter Communities Workshops at the City of Orlando

Monday November 18, 2019 – For Immediate Release

ORLANDO, Fla. – Government leaders from across Florida including Charlotte, Manatee, Hillsborough and Orange Counties, the City of Orlando up to the North Florida region; gathered on November 13, 2019 in a daylong Toward Smarter Communities workshop. In this hands-on event designed by Bradenton-based company Spark Growth, leaders worked to define together what “smarter” looks like across our state as we move into the future. Major topics on the table included transportation, sustainability and resiliency – the priority issues identified by Florida government leaders in workshop prep sessions.

Teams created “pathway solutions” they will work on collaboratively, across city and county boundaries. Proposed solutions included storm and disaster preparation to minimize disruptions, a predictive and data-driven solution to manage citizen’s “energy burden”, a transportation dashboard addressing congestion management usable to both government and citizens, and a proposal for connecting projects regionally with mechanisms for obtaining buy-in across wider geographical regions in the state. Follow-up meetings for each are scheduled 30 and 60 days in the future to report progress and adjust the approach based on what has been learned to date.

Workshops were aided by key industry partners who provide specific and focused mentoring and perspective to the collaborative, hands-on working sessions. Select industry partners bring a broad perspective and expertise in implementation to help define a set of common strategies for communities. Partners at the table included NTT Data, Draftpros Inc. and SAS.

Based on needs identified by city and county decision makers, Spark Growth has entered into an agreement with San Francisco-based UrbanLeap.io to provide the UrbanLeap platform for team communications and project management. A community-based toolset for accelerating urban innovation, UrbanLeap centralizes potential solutions for team sharing, automates project workflows, and “brings order to the chaos of innovation in the public sector.”

“Imagine the communities of the future – will people navigate from place to place with ease, or will the streets be chaotic and gridlocked? Will communities be healthy and sustainable places to live, or will environmental problems spiral? Will communities be able to provide adequate housing, infrastructure, and services to keep up with the needs of surging populations?” McKinsey Global Institute on Smart Cities.
